We Tried The Rock’s Cheat Meals, Here’s What We Learned

The Rock's Cheat Meals

If you’ve ever scrolled Instagram and happened upon one of The Rock’s cheat meals, you’ve undoubtedly gotten major food FOMO. The big man’s cheat meals are decedent, massive and a carb-lover’s heaven. He works hard for those Sunday cheat meals, but we couldn’t help but get a little jealous looking at photos of The Rock’s cheat meals.

Truthfully, we got a bit trigged by Dwayne’s cheats. We wondered how one human, even a big one who is incredibly fit, could take down so much food. And in all honesty, we got a tad resentful that he got to eat all that he does. We try to have a good relationship with food, but The Rock’s food confidence had us a bit jealous and resentful all at once.

As much as we try to watch what we eat, we found ourselves a bit fixated on what he ate. It was as though The Rock’s cheat meals were beckoning us to let go of our food rules and say to ourselves, “WWDE?” What would Dwayne eat? We found ourselves wanting to know what it felt like to give yourself permission to eat whatever the hell you wanted with no guilt, no shame and no rules.

So we tasked two editors to try Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s cheat meals over four weeks time. They documented their findings, like the food-scientists they are.

Here’s what we learned.

1

The Rock's Cheat Meals

Lions, Tigers & Footlongs, Oh My!

What He Ate: “Huge turkey subs-oven roasted turkey, provolone cheese, lettuce, tomato onion and mayo on the side.  Huge fudge brownies with milk chocolate chips, natural peanut butter and fudge smothered and drizzled on top.”

What We Ate:  Half a turkey sub, half a brownie.

Takeaway:  We had major food-guilt diving into this. But one bite of a delicious, gooey brownie gave us food-amnesia and we quickly forgot to feel bad.

Lesson learned: If you’re going to eat it, enjoy it.

Dwayne Johnson's Cheat Meal

More Sushi And Pancakes That Meets The Eye

What He Ate: “Sush and banana, chocolate chip pancakes.”

What We Ate:  We slogged through one and a half sushi rolls (12 pieces) and couldn’t muster up more than a bite of a pancake.

Takeaway:  While this is way more carbs than we could comfortably take down, we admired The Rock’s relationship with carbs.

Lesson Learned: Carbs don’t have to be scary.

Peanut Butter Pancakes With A Side Of Funny

What He Ate: “Chocolate chip banana pancakes, syrup, peanut butter and @aliwong. Very funny and talented chick. Highly recommend!”

What We Ate:  We got full after two peanut butter/syrup covered pancakes. Truth be told, we could have stopped after one.

Takeaway: The thought of covering pancakes in peanut butter had us a bit anxious, and hungry.  But we also realized how much we’ve missed pancakes, we may never have an egg white again.

Lesson Learned:  Breakfast food can make for an amazing desert.  We’re no longer scared of you pancakes, and French toast.

The Rock Sushi Train

Let's Take A Ride On The Rock's Sushi Train

What He Ate: “sushi train 🍣 🚂 rolls along like an unstoppable force.”

What We Ate: We felt pretty proud that we could get through about half of one plate before we filled up.

Takeaway:  We’re not afraid to admit that we have a deep love affair with sushi. We always wish we could have more, but get scared of all that rice.  But when we gave ourselves permission to eat what The Rock ate, we ate until we were comfortably full and didn’t lament not being able to have more.

Lesson Learned:  Listen to your bod.  It knows how much food you need.

The Rock Sushi

Stuffed Chocolate Chip Cookies With A Side Of Sushi

What He Ate:  “By any means necessary. Just cuz I’m in London, doesn’t mean my Sunday Sushi Train 🍣 🚂 doesn’t roll on. Shout to my ace/partner in crime, Emily Blunt for the soosh recommendation. Polished it off w/ my signature double stuffed chocolate and peanut butter chip cookies with real peanut butter in the middle.”

What We Ate:   One and a half sushi rolls and one cookie.

Takeaway:  Our eyes got bigger than our stomach here and we were in a food coma for hours.

Lesson Learned: Don’t be a glutton. It’s no fun to feel stuffed after a meal.

A Light Meal: Bone In Rib Eye With A Loaded Baked Potato

What He Ate:#CheatMealSunday as I needed some good cheat day fats so I went with a 33oz Bone In Ribeye with a 1 pound loaded baked potato.”

What We Ate:  We got through a third of a steak and half a loaded baked potato.

Takeaway:  After all that sushi, the steak was refreshingly light.  Who knew?  We haven’t had a baked potato in a decade so that was a real cheat treat.  That said steak and potatoes are filling, but completely worth every bite.

Lesson Learned:  Don’t be afraid of meat, if meat is your jam.

The Rock Sushi Train

So Many Cookies, So Little Time

What He Ate:  “Start with 15 ginormous “DJ Heavens” of milk chocolate and salted caramel chips with peanut butter in the middle… I can take about 5 of these cookies to “DJ pound town” and the rest I take to work so the crew can enjoy!”

What We Ate:  3 cookies, proudly.

Takeaway:   We’re not afraid to admit that if we’re going to dive into desert land, it’s usually for cookies.  We had no problem knocking back three and had some the next day.

Lesson Learned:  If there’s a food you love, go all in.  Don’t do it all the time, but enjoy it if you’re going to have it.  The Rock does and now so do we.

The Rock's Cheat Meals

Dinner For One: An Entire Pineapple Pizza

What He Ate: “I love these midweek pizza carb ups like a drunk loves free peanuts. As for my pizza toppings – keep in mind, I’m the guy who likes to put tequila and brown sugar in my oatmeal, so pineapple on pizza is MY JAM – with ham.”

What We Ate:  We’re not put off by pineapple on pizza, but we couldn’t get close to The Rock’s intake. We had three pieces, which felt like a lot.  We had to stop there.

Takeaway:   We were bloated, thirsty and totally satisfied all day.

Lesson Learned: It felt good to pizza away to our heart’s content, even if our fingers were bloated like mini hot dogs for days to come.

The Rock Eat carbs

Carbo-loading And Loving It

What He Ate: “Kickin’ off my Sunday cheat meals right with pasta 🍝 bolognese & 2 New York bagels 🥯”

What We Ate: We went all in on the pasta, but didn’t have room for the bagels.

Takeaway:   It felt good to unabashedly dive into a bowl of pasta without fear of over-carbing. That said, the thought of a bagel after a bowl of bolognese felt like over-kill.

Lesson Learned:  Pasta’s delicious. Oh, how we’ve missed you.

What The Rock Eats

Fries With A Side Of Two Burgers

What He Ate: Sunday cheat meal train 🚂 rolls on down the line. Two fat 8oz double cheeseburgers with bacon and fries.
Double shot of my new tequila #Teremana”

What We Ate:  We started with the fries and happily took them down.  We had about half a burger and were satisfied with that.

Takeaway: We’re big on fries and not so big on burgers, so we decided to dive into what we loved first. We never met a fry we didn’t like so the strategy paid off.

Lesson Learned:  Dive in to what you really like and don’t feel bad about it.
