While we may never agree on whether JLo, Gaga or Amanda Gorman stole the show at Joe Biden’s presidential inauguration, there is no debate that the viral Bernie Sanders meme has completely dominated the Internet ever since. The sports world has not missed out on creating its own version of the meme sensation that has the Vermont senator masked, bundled up in homemade mittens, while slumped in a folding chair like a disgruntled dad whose been parked at the mall while mom and the kids shop to their heart’s content.
The mittens, as it turns out, were a gift from a Vermont school teacher named Jen Ellis who gifted them to Senator Sanders five years ago. Having no idea Bernie would wear her mittens to Joe Biden’s inauguration, Ms. Ellis told Good Morning America she was “flattered” her mittens had gone viral.
And while the Senator told Seth Meyers he was just trying to stay warm and pay attention to what was happening, the image of the bundled up Vermont senator placed in obscure settings like the Friends set or the Super Bowl, has the Internet collectively doubled over.
